Reasons For Parents Deciding To Start, Continue, Or End Treatment For Adhd

There are multiple stressors, indicators and factors that affect parents in their decision making in considering a treatment or therapy for their child’s Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity symptoms. There are four reasons showing parent’s responses and reactions on their children’s disorder. First is the parent stressor. Parents of children diagnosed with ADHD suffer from blaming and doubting themselves because of their children’s condition. Also, pressures in school give them difficulties that may result to conflicts. They also experience confusions and problems on whether what treatment or therapy their children must take. Because of these, they too experience emotional problems in making the right decisions.

Second are the factors affecting their decisions in starting or initiation medications on their children. The recognition of parents of their children’s disorder and the evaluation and assessment of teachers of the behaviors and attitude of children at school will help in deciding to begin a medication or therapy to the patient. It must also be importantly considered to consult a doctor or any specialist of the disorder whether to begin a medication or therapy to the child. The decision of starting medications or therapies to patients diagnosed with ADHD will be carefully thought of with the help and support of family members and the belief of parents with regard to biomedical treatment. The failure of other treatments may also make parents decide to start and try new treatment for their child. After considering also factors, it is important to know the consequences and risks every therapy or medication bring.

Third are the factors that may cause delay in the initiation or beginning of medication or therapy. When parents deny that there child has Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder the delay of starting and applying medication on their children occur. Also, miscommunication with parents and other school employees involved, believing hearsays and stories regarding the ineffectiveness of therapies and medications, lack of trust and faith on a doctor or any specialist of the disorder and the lack of support and encouragement from family members result to the delay or even not resorting to medications and therapies to treat the symptoms of the disorder. These cases can worsen the condition of the ADHD patient.

Lastly are the factors directly related with doubt and uncertainty. Persistent concerns and doubts result to parents thinking not only twice but many times regarding the treatment to be applied on their children. Unintentional and even intentional trials experienced during medication process affect the decision of parents.
